Good Drum Triggering Practices:
Isolation is key. Far more than getting a good tone, is accurately capturing the when and how hard? of the hit in question.
Learn your microphones' null points and USE THEM!
Cymbals love to ruin tom tom tracks and hi hats can easily make a snare track useless as a trigger. Use polar patterns and placement as tools in your goal to create a strong, clean trigger signal.
If possible, it is often easier to trigger from the bottom of a tom or snare as it provides much greater rejection of the cymbals.
